Indian prints from Palempore in India, Kalamkari from Persia, printed fabrics from Nîmes or Marseille were all known in the 18th century under the name "Indian," in reference to their distant origin.
It was at the end of the 19th century, driven by the passion of a herdsman, the Marquis Folco de Baroncelli-Javon, known as Lou Marquès (The Marquis), that the herdsman fashion and all its codes came into being. Since 1938, the Mistral workshops have continued to produce quality clothing in the pure herdsman tradition under the brand Indiennes de Nîmes.
