Mercator folding knife - black

This folding knife is a legend. Designed in 1867 in Solingen, a German cutlery town, it was the very first knife with a folded steel handle, well before the Douk -douk and Higonokami . Although it was initially known for equipping German soldiers during the First World War, it owes its fame mainly to the Bronx gangsters who nicknamed it the "Black Cat Knife" because of the black cat engraved on the handle. Today it is prized by knife collectors for its history and quality of manufacture.

Product History

Designed in 1867 in Solingen, a German city of steel and cutlery, it owes its name to the Latin translation of its creator's name, Kaufmann, meaning "merchant" in German. A contemporary of the French Pradel, it stands out for its innovative side with a folded steel handle that makes it both extra-flat and very durable. With these qualities, it equipped German soldiers during both world wars. Later exported to the United States, it is to the Bronx gangsters, in the K55K version, that it owes its legend and its nickname "Black cat knife" because of the black cat engraved on the handle. Otter is more concerned with quality than quantity, but takes particular care in the finishing of its knives. It requires no fewer than 40 manual steps to make a Mercator.
