Douk-Douk knife 9cm weapon bronze

The Cognet cutlery, founded in Thiers in 1835, created this knife in 1929 for the Melanesian market which constituted an interesting commercial center. The character struck on the handle bears the image of the Melanesian god Douk-Douk whose origins are lost in the mists of time and his cult is still perpetuated today. The Melanesian market having proved disappointing, the marketing of the Douk-Douk then turned towards North Africa where, in a very short time, it would experience unprecedented success, to become the "national pocket knife" in Algeria, then a French province. Later the French Administration considered it “war material” and prohibited its importation. The Douk-Douk thus became the “snack knife” of the French military. It was with the return of the troops following decolonization that the Douk-Douk began a new career in mainland France to become today an icon of Cognet cutlery.
