Le Laboureur

Corporate pants, half balloon shape, wide at the thighs and narrowed at the ankles, come from a need for ease and functionality. This “low waist” version, known as a belt loop, can be worn with a belt or clipped suspenders. The velvet cord (300 lines/m) ensures warmth and robustness. It is in this coarse ribbed fabric, originating from England, that the first largeot was designed by Adolphe Lafont in 1896. Made in France (Digoin, Burgundy). Available in 4 colors corresponding to the Compagnons corporations: Black for carpenters and roofers, Brown for cabinetmakers, Hazelnut for carpenters, Ecru for stonemasons. A little stiff when new, it will quickly soften to become fluid, like a real second skin.

Product History

The largeot, an iconic pair of trousers created in 1896 under the scissors of the Lyon tailor Adolphe Lafont who made them for his carpenter father-in-law.

The balloon or half-balloon shape, narrowed at the ankles, was intended to be loose and comfortable to facilitate movement on roofs, or for carpentry work. It was worn high, a tightening tab allowed a hammer to be hung, a piped pocket on the right leg held a folding rule, gauge and pencil. Finally, a gusset pocket held a watch, chalk or possibly a clove of garlic for insect bites.

Originally designed in a heavy, coarse-ribbed velvet, or in a shaved velvet called "mole skin", ancestor of today's moleskin. Never washed but only beaten and brushed, it was often said that "the wider the breeches, the stronger the man".

Two cuts: With straps and suspenders (high waist), and with belt loops (low waist). Three fabric qualities: Velvet, moleskin and linen/cotton blend. While these pants are still worn by generations of professionals for their robustness and comfort, they now appeal to a private clientele for their authenticity and timelessness.
